It always struck me when I listened to the Broadway revival CD that the first number (“Little Shop of Horrors”) seemed incredibly long. Furthermore, I find it boring.

The rule in theatre is “you never get a second chance to create a first impression” and I feel this opening number fails this. Furthermore, I have seen versions on YouTube where the Doo-Wop Girls are just ‘doing it for themselves’ and not engaging the audience.

So I checked my Libretto and, sure enough, the Broadway version has almost doubled the length of the song!

That’s not good. Another rule: “Leave them wanting more”.

So I have edited the Broadway track to conform with the Libretto and to bring it back to its original length and it feels so much better and here it is.  You can play it HERE and right-click it to download it (‘Save link as …’).

Furthermore, as we are seeing them for the first time, I think it would be very nice to ‘introduce’ the Doo-Wop Girls in programme order: RONETTE, CRYSTAL and CHIFFON.

So here is a revised singing order …

RONETTE (as CRYSTAL and CHIFFON sing back-up)
Shing a ling

What a creepy thing
To be happenin’

(shouted, a la Shangri-Las)

RONETTE
Lookout!

CRYSTAL
Lookout!

CHIFFON
Lookout!

RONETTE, CRYSTAL & CHIFFON
Lookout!

CRYSTAL
Shang a lang,
Feel the strum and drang
in the air!

RONETTE, CRYSTAL & CHIFFON
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

CHIFFON
Sha la la
Stop right where you are
Doncha move a thing

RONETTE
You better

RONETTE, CRYSTAL & CHIFFON
You better

Tellin’ you, you better
Tell your mama
Somethin’s gonna get her
She better

Everybody better beware!

(Shop revealed)

RONETTE
Come-a, come-a, come-a

RONETTE, CRYSTAL & CHIFFON
Little shop
Little shoppa horrors
Bop sh’bop
You’ll never stop the terror
Little shop
