A fresh-faced sailor with a heart of gold, Anthony Hope, as his surname suggests, offers an idealistic counterpoint to the black pessimism of his friend Sweeney.  From the first time we meet him, Anthony is happy to be in London, a city that fills him with wonder, but when he meets Johanna and falls in love, his wonder and joy know no bounds.  The hardships the two lovers face don’t seem to faze Anthony, though the haunting melody of “Johanna” and some of the song’s more brooding lyrics (“I am in the dark beside you/Buried sweetly in your yellow hair”) do lightly suggest that even Anthony has his darker urges.  Nevertheless, the primary impression Anthony gives is one of light and optimism.  The role requires a strong, melodious singer with an appealing, leading-man presence.
