In his book A LITTLE GIRL IS DEAD, Harry Golden writes …

Two months to the day after they lynched Leo Frank, the Knights of Mary Phagan climbed to the bald top of Stone Mountain outside Atlanta and burned a huge cross, visible throughout the city.

Five weeks later, on Thanksgiving Day, one William Joseph Simmons led fifteen of the Knights of Mary Phagan to the top of Stone Mountain, where they conducted the first initiation ceremony of the Ku Klux Klan.

The frenzy generated by the Frank case presented a valuable opportunity to the promoters of “The Invisible Empire”. A historian of the Klan writes: “The lynching of the Jewish factory owner, Leo Frank, helped shape and prepare the way for the (modern) Ku Klux Klan”.

The Ku Klux Klan (KKK), or just the Klan is the name of a far right hate group in the United States that has played a violent role against African Americans and Jews in the South. It is famous for burning crosses and lynchings and emphasizes secrecy and distinctive costumes, and calls for the purification of American society, ethnically and politically.

The costume of the Ku Klux Klan (sometimes known as the “glory suit” by Klansmen) is perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Ku Klux Klan, and is recognized worldwide. The archetypal outfit was actually popularized largely during the revival of the Klan from 1915 to 1944 and consists of: a floor-length, solid-white robe (often decorated with a round badge bearing an insignia with a cross) and a white, sharply pointed hat that includes a full-faced cloth mask with eye holes. The basic costume, which has some rank-based and regional variations, is designed deliberately both to disguise its wearer’s identity and to give the wearer an intimidating appearance.

The KKK are very much part of the classic silent movie The Birth of a Nation by D. W. Griffith.
