The Creek and Cherokee peoples lived in the Atlanta area before non-native settlers began arriving in the 18 th and 19 th centuries. The Georgia legislature decided to build the Western and Atlantic Railroad in 1836, and the settlement that would become Atlanta sprang up around the railroad’s terminus.

Its destruction near the end of the American Civil War is forever known as the Fall of Atlanta.

It was rebuilt after the war and by 1913, when our show is set, it had become an important commercial hub in the south,

and remains so to this day.




Today, Atlanta is home to roughly 450,000 people, and more than 5.4 million people live in the greater metropolitan area. Atlanta hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics, and is considered a world-class city.




Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the busiest airport in the world.
