LITTLE BUTTERCUP (A Portsmouth Bumboat Woman)

Lisa Scott

The “rosiest, roundest, and reddest beauty in all Spithead,” Buttercup potters around the harbour selling wares to the crews of ships that are at anchor. As a teenager, she served as a nanny for babies – including Ralph Rackstraw and Captain Corcoran – and accidentally switched the two. Good-natured, comical, plump and pleasant, Buttercup has fallen in love with the Captain, but he feels unable to reciprocate due to his status above her as an aristocrat (until the end, when it is revealed that he is, in fact, a commoner, and it is Ralph who is the aristocratic captain). This role requires a good regional” accent.
